Dear Neighbours,

I hope that you had a wonderful summer and took advantage of the great weather. I also hope you spent time with friends and family. With the new school year underway, I would like to take the opportunity to highlight some of the recent work by your Provincial government in both education and supports for children.

Alberta’s government is providing school authorities additional funding to support higher salaries for teachers, address enrolment growth, and support francophone education by providing an additional $50 million in 2022/23 to cover recently ratified bargaining agreements with teachers. Additionally, your Provincial government is hiring up to 1,600 more teachers and support staff for this new school year. Government is continuing to support school authorities through a new supplemental enrolment growth grant, with more than $7 million in additional student funding available to school authorities who experience enrolment growth above a set threshold. Using three funding formulas, separate rates will compensate school authorities for experiencing two percent more students, between two and five percent, and growth rates exceeding five percent.

I am also pleased to let you know, 48 new school projects are currently underway in planning, design, or construction. Further to this, 11 new schools were completed this summer, and in time for the new school year. In fact, your Provincial government is investing $1.5 billion over three years to provide Albertans with new and modernized schools, which also supports more than 8,400 construction-related jobs.

Have a great school year.

Sincerely,

Nicholas Milliken
