Edgemont’s President’s Message for September

The lazy, crazy days of summer are coming to a close and fall is upon us. Some years, it seems like September is the most enjoyable month with moderate temperatures during the day and cooling in the evening. Although we all know how fickle Calgary’s weather can be, we need to have clothes out for both winter and summer temperatures.

Summer programs at the community centre have been a success. The camps that host children have varied themes and are in high demand. Keep this in mind for next summer when registration opens online. You need to be quick to make sure your children have a spot.

New to our list of programs is a Board Games Night on October 24 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. Anyone 14 years of age and older is welcome. Bring snacks and your favourite games and let the “friendly” competition begin!

The Winter Market returns to the Edgemont Community Centre on November 29 from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. Registration for vendors is open at https://edgemont.getcommunal.com/member/parent_programs/2084. We already have an uptake in vendor registrations, so if this is something that interests you, don’t wait too long. We have limited spaces.

Watch the website for two new programs: Sip and Paint and Gardening Tips. Details have not been confirmed but will be posted as soon as we have them firmed up.

From time to time, we approach businesses in our community to become program partners or sponsors. We are happy to work with companies that support our programs with either donations or gifts-in-kind. In return, we offer the company an increased presence in our social media postings and recognition at our events. If increasing your company’s profile by becoming a partner or sponsor is something that appeals to you, contact our office for more information ([email protected]). We love to see companies invest in our community and get recognized as good corporate citizens!

As the leaves turn colour, many people are out in their yards doing clean up. The City of Calgary has sent out a reminder about their recycling services. Please take note as you put items in the various bins. We want to try to eliminate cart contamination which means that items end up in the wrong bin and this complicates matters when the waste is sorted. The consequences of contamination create challenges that impact the waste facilities, the health and safety of workers, and increase the program costs for Calgarians. For more information about what goes where, visit Calgary.ca/contamination or contact Natalia Gonzales, Waste Diversion Specialist at [email protected].

As far as Board business goes, we continue to work to see what can be done about the dilapidated signage at the corner of Country Hills Boulevard and Edgepark Boulevard NW. We raise this matter with the City at every opportunity. When you meet with municipal candidates vying for councillor positions in October, I’d ask you to raise this as well. We are working with the City and the Calgary Board of Education on maintenance matters at the centre. The community association works under a joint use agreement and there are three parties involved in many of our decisions. Right now, establishing responsibility for the maintenance of the skylight is at the top of our list and has been for some time. ECA has limits on what it can do under our joint use agreements and as such, some of the matters that residents raise as concerns, ECA has no jurisdiction over. That said, we are cognisant of the fact that we want Edgemont to be a clean, well maintained, and welcoming community so although we may not be able to address the matter directly, we can point callers in the right direction and advocate on their behalf.
