At the December 13 Board meeting, a representative from Counsellor Pootmans’ office for Ward 6 attended to provide updates. Notably, a portion of the Douglas Fir Trail has been closed out of an abundance of caution due to deterioration of the boardwalk and stairs. The City will study erosion and drainage there to provide a safe trail for all users. We also discussed the developments occurring along 17 Avenue. We learned that the City’s waste management services encourage sharing of waste and recycling bins between primary and secondary suites to help reduce bin crowding on roads and alleyways as density increases.
Fine tuning of the hall’s operation continues as we open from the renovations. Lots of volunteer time and community member skillsets are going into these corrections and finalizations. Thank you to everyone helping out with this!

Santa Parade
On Saturday December 9, we had the spirit of Christmas throughout Glendale! Santa and an enthusiastic group of elves toured Glendale for three hours, led by the Calgary Police Service. Everyone then gathered back at the hall for Santa photos, cookies, and hot chocolate. About 100 new toys were donated and distributed to Santa’s The Magic of Christmas, and locally, Brenda’s House in Killarney and Radiance Family Society in Westgate.

Single Use Items Bylaw

Calgary’s Single-Use Items Bylaw starts January 16, 2024. Single-use items such as plastic shopping bags, utensils, straws, and napkins are designed to be used only once before being thrown away. The bylaw aims to lessen what will end up as litter or go into landfill.
New paper and reusable shopping bags will only be provided on request and there will be minimum fees of $0.15 for paper and $1 for reusable. This applies to in-store, takeout, drive-thru, and delivery orders. Keep a small box, reusable bag, or lunch bag in your vehicle to hold your food while you drive. For delivery, indicate “no bags” on your order and provide instructions to put the order in boxes or bags you have set out.
Foodware accessories, such as cutlery, condiment packets, napkins, and straws will only be provided on request. This also applies to dine-in, take-out, drive-thru, and delivery. Use reusable utensils and straws where you can and only ask for them as needed.
