Glendale’s April Message from the Board

Glendale mb

by Chris Welner, President

We are living through the strangest times with so much uncertainty in our lives in this health and economic crisis. We hope that all of our families, friends and neighbours have been coping well and getting any help they need to carry on, or have been able to help those in need.

All activities at the Glendale Community Association have been on hold since mid-March. Our preschool was closed, and user groups and renters have been told our facilities are off-limits until further notice. We are taking this opportunity to clean and sanitize the Community Hall so we can all feel safe when it comes time to reopen the facilities.

All social gatherings have been postponed until further notice. Among the events that will not be held this spring are the Easter Egg Hunt, Jane’s Walk and a volunteer appreciation evening. Whether there is a party or not, please know that we owe great thanks to all of our volunteers. They have been supporting the Guides, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, maintaining our ice rinks, helping at casinos, helping at the preschool and doing a thousand other things to make our community awesome.

This issue of the Thumper was supposed to reveal details of the first Turtle Hill Music Festival. Some of Calgary’s best musical talent live right here in our Southwest Calgary communities and the Turtle Hill Music Festival was going to bring them together to entertain us for an afternoon. It was scheduled for Neighbour Day, June 20, 2020. With all of the uncertainty over Covid-19, the festival has been postponed until 2021. You will be hearing a lot more about it in the next year.

Please watch our Facebook page for more current news on Glendale facilities and programs. We will share news about scheduled upcoming events such as the Stampede Breakfast and our Community Garden planting day. Let’s hope the strategies to contain Covid-19 have been successful and life can return to some form of normalcy soon.

In the meantime, I will borrow these words of wisdom from Councillor Jeff Davison: Here are three principles to focus on today – clean hands, clear heads and open hearts.

  • Clean hands – This is obvious, but crucial. If you are sick, please stay home. Call 811 if you have symptoms. Do not go to the hospital or your doctor.
  • Clear heads – The most important thing to note is there is no reason to panic.
  • Open hearts – We have to be responsible for our own health, but we can do a lot to help our neighbours. Maybe that means bringing supplies or a meal to your neighbours’ doorstep (do not go inside) or shovelling their sidewalk. Help out when you can.
