November is a time to reflect and commemorate all the sacrifices our military veterans make. Every year on Remembrance Day, we take a moment to pause and reflect on all those that have bravely sacrificed so we can have the freedoms and human rights that we enjoy today.
2022 is the 80th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid. On August 19, 1942, Canadian military personnel came ashore on the heavily fortified port of Dieppe, France. Out of the 6,100 Allied troops that participated in the Dieppe raid approximately 5,000 of them were Canadian. Unfortunately, Canada had paid a steep price on the raid. In total, 916 Canadians lost their lives and 1,946 became Prisoners of War.
I will be attending remembrance events throughout the city. Please join me in pausing for a moment of silence to honour the many brave men and women who have sacrificed, and continue to sacrifice, so that we enjoy the benefits of a free society.
Our challenges in Ottawa continue. The government wants to continue with a ‘hybrid Parliament’, which arose during the pandemic — long after every other democratic institution in the world has returned to their practices that are historical ways of upholding the will of the people who elect us. This is an intentional ‘dumbing down’ of Canada’s Parliament. Ministers do not respond adequately to questions, journalist analysis is largely absent, and our democratic oversight processes are being diluted.
My party is pushing to return to established parliamentary practices, but other parties that take this work less seriously are content to continue with a less accountable system. The main effect of this is to limit the historical role of the Opposition, which we are doing our utmost to uphold. This is important work, and we lose our democratic processes at our peril. On your behalf, I will continue to do my utmost to make our democracy work in the way in which it was intended.
