Neighbour Day in Glendale

This year marks the ten-year anniversary of Neighbour Day, an annual day dedicated to celebrating the connection between local residents. Neighbour Day started as a way to recognize the incredible outpouring of support and generosity following the 2013 floods. Calgarians are encouraged to celebrate the day by hosting their own events, including block parties, afternoon teas, picnics, scavenger hunts, games, or other events.

Laura and Chad on Glenside Drive hosted a Neighbour Day block party and potluck on June 17. When the couple first moved to Glendale, other neighbours hosted a similar event, but the pandemic resulted in a pause of this annual celebration. This year, Laura and Chad made sure to apply for a free permit from The City early, blocking street access to Glendside Drive on the day of the event. They put invitations in mailboxes on their street and got a great turnout. Local neighbors pitched in, bringing a BBQ, tables, drinks, and food. The weather was beautiful and the event was a great opportunity to come together in person once again and visit.

Henri, age 10, and his sister Charlie, who is six, celebrated Neighbour Day by setting up an iced tea stand. By mid-day, they had already made $10 and put smiles on many Glendale faces.

Toxic Invasive Plant Popping Up in Glendale

Be on the lookout for black henbane, which has been making an appearance in yards across our community. This tall and beautiful plant is harmful to humans and animals, produces many seeds, is not native, and is very invasive. If you come across black henbane, be sure to put on gloves and long sleeves to pull it out and dispose of it in your black bin, not compost.
