Busy Month for Seniors
in the Loop
First there was birdwatching
in Carburn Park led by one of our members, Dr. Stephen Boucher, who is an avid birdwatcher
and active member of the Fish Creek Birdwatchers. We spotted American wigeons,
buffleheads, cinnamon teals, bald eagles, gadwalls, double crested cormorants, grackle
and a host of pelicans among many others.
The monthly gathering
was extremely well attended – 52 attendees! The guest presentation was on Wills
& Estates by Chartered Accountant and Retired Tax Lawyer. Esmail has received
a number of awards over four decades of teaching experience and five decades of
professional experience. We learned a lot about
what is often omitted in wills and estate planning. Esmail shared with us factors
we all need to consider avoiding unpleasant surprises and aggravation for our loved
ones after we die. We learned more about estate planning in simple and understandable
language and were provided a checklist to take home and follow in order to avoid
pitfalls and reconsider reviewing our estate plans from different perspectives.
This was followed by
an hour of Restorative Rhythm drum circle led by Kaura Grant, whose mantra is “if
you have a heartbeat, you can drum”. So, with a bunch of rented drums and rhythm
instruments of various sizes and shapes, we connected through expressive drumbeats,
mindful movement and concluded with a nurturing rhythm cradle.
With the construction
in progress at the MLCA Hall, we have found alternative spaces for Canasta every
Monday evening at the Hudson Social room at the corner of 16 St and 33 Ave and Mahjong
every Friday afternoon at Bell’s café on 34 Ave.
Its outdoor pickleball
time so we are happy to return to our home courts on Tuesday and Friday mornings.
We also held a beginner’s course to a few more enthusiastic members who we hope
will be joining us on the courts for the outdoor season which usually continues
till Thanksgiving.
We launched and informal
“Fitness Fun in the Park” session behind the MLCA building every Thursday afternoon
to make up for the absence of fitness programs during construction.
Some of us are off
to Rosebud Theater to see the play entitled “Hurry Hard” while there are some others
off to see yet another National Theater Live play “The Playboy of The Western World”
at a local cinema
If you or any one in
our community would like to know more about our activities and join us, please reach
out to me and I will be pleased to welcome you.
