Millrise Shawnessy’s Message from the Board for June

New website: Thanks for your patience as we transition to a new website. The new site will allow us to update the messages ourselves, so we’ll be keeping it more current and useful. It will also facilitate some automation meaning we will be able to serve you better. For example, new members will receive a digital membership card.

Membership: Thanks to those who renewed or joined for the first time in May, our Membership Month. With our new system, you can join anytime to enjoy 12 months of membership and receive an email reminder when it’s time to renew.

Join SECA to help us build a more neighbourly community where there is a sense of belonging and community pride. Join online at Shawnee-evergreen.ca. If you live in Evergreen Estates (street name includes EverGREEN), Shawnee Park, Shawnee Slopes, Fairways Villas, Fish Creek Exchange or Beacon Hill, SECA is your community Association.

Events and Programs: SECA has taken a conservative approach to programs and events during the pandemic. We are eager to return to events and programs when it is safe. Sadly, our annual Stampede Breakfast is cancelled again. We are looking forward to resuming our Community Campfires and our children’s Nature Play program as soon as possible. Stay tuned.

Community Clean Up: SECA is pleased to partner with the Calgary Evergreen Community Association for their Community Clean Up event on Sunday June 27, 2021, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, in the parking lot at Sobey’s – Bridlewood. Watch our e-newsletter and Facebook for more details about what items can and cannot be accepted. Please contact [email protected] if you can volunteer for SECA at this event.

Taking Time to Refresh Outdoors: Our neighbourhood is blessed with pathways and parks that are bursting with fresh spring growth. Being adjacent to Fish Creek Provincial Park means SECA residents enjoy many additional opportunities to connect with nature, to refresh our minds, to exercise and, to socialize safely.

Getting Along Outdoors: With more traffic on paths and roadways and a steep increase in park use, it’s important that we share these spaces graciously. While some pathway users are strolling, others are looking for a workout but if we all observe some basic rules, we’ll all be able to enjoy our journey.

  • Cyclists should use a bell or verbal alert when they intend to overtake, and they should pass on the left.
  • Walkers should stay right, and make sure to keep pets and youngsters from straying to the left.
  • Please pick up your dog waste and deposit it in a nearby receptacle.
  • Higher rates of use mean more trash along the trails and pathways. Why not take an extra bag on your walk so you can pick up a few pieces of garbage along the way.
  • Stay on the paths. Our beloved Fish Creek Park is showing the impact of higher use. While straying off-trail might feel right at the time, it doesn’t take long for short-cut to grow into a heavily travelled pathway. In the end, it means less habitat for wildlife.

We can serve you best when we are connected! Receive our electronic newsletters by emailing [email protected] and like our Facebook page – @ShawneeEvergreenYYC. Our Board meetings are open though we appreciate knowing if you plan to attend so that we can manage our agenda. If you are a parent to children (up to 12 years of age) and want to be alerted to the restart of our SECA Plays programs, please email [email protected] to join that mailing list.

The Board of Directors is always interested in your feedback!
