CBMCA Community Hero Awards 2023

Mission cn

Each year CBMCA recognizes the contributions of some wonderful volunteers. Leslie Evans, Executive Director of the Federation of Calgary Communities, presented two of these Community Hero Awards. Bob Lang, CBMCA President presented three awards at the December 6 jazz event.

The Jazz Combo

CBMCA has hosted the Cliff Bungalow – Mission Jazz series since 2010. At one time we were one of few venues where you could listen to jazz in Calgary. We even did hybrid in-person and online concerts during the pandemic.

It takes volunteers for these events to occur. We recognized several volunteers who have helped make these events possible.

Brandon Hossack – Brandon is a board member and a long-time volunteer at jazz events. He helps at the bar, gets extra chairs when we have a large crowd, and helps put the chairs away afterwards. He is our expert on making cocktails. His award was presented at the December 6 jazz event.

Ken Hryciw – Ken is a former board member and is also a long-time volunteer at jazz events. He helps put up the chairs and helps at the bar. He is always making funny remarks to our guests and the jazz musicians. His award was presented at the December 6 jazz event.

Lucy Arellano – Lucy wears more than one hat. One of those hats is being the Social Director, and jazz is one of our regular social events. She helps at the entrance and in other ways. She is the one who connected us to Square, so now you can pay by credit card. Her award was presented at the November 22 AGM.

Rick Climans – Rick is the person who arranges for and schedules the jazz groups. He has been doing this for five years. Due to the popularity of our jazz events, he has groups scheduled for over a year in advance. His award was presented at the December 6 jazz event.

Georgina Jameson – Georgina is the coordinator of the Mission Community Garden, our first community garden. While we are unsure how long she has done this, it may be around 20 years. She obviously should have been recognized before now, but she and her husband spend the winter in New Zealand and they usually depart before the AGM. Her award was presented at the November 22 AGM. We thank her for her many years of contributing to the life of our community.
