As the season of spring unfolds around us, we are reminded of renewal, hope, and the quiet beauty of growth. Longer days and warmer sunshine invite us to pause and reflect on what it means to nurture not only the world around us, but also one another. In this spirit, we recognize Asian Heritage Month, Catholic Education Week, and Mental Health Week in May – each offering a meaningful opportunity to grow in understanding, gratitude, and compassion.
This call to growth begins with how we come to know and appreciate one another. Our Catholic faith is lived and expressed in countless ways across cultures. Asian Heritage Month holds special significance as we celebrate the cultures and traditions that enrich our communities and schools. Across the Calgary Catholic School District (CCSD), we are proud to support this learning through resources such as our Asian Heritage Month posters, which highlight the many achievements and contributions of individuals of Asian heritage. By taking the time to learn about one another’s heritage, we grow not only in knowledge, but in empathy and respect, deepening our understanding of God’s creation.
This same spirit of belonging is at the heart of Catholic Education Week. It is a time to reflect and give thanks for the profound gift of Catholic education, which has shaped generations of students in our province. In our schools, learning extends far beyond the classroom – it is found in the relationships we build, the care we show and the faith we live each day. In 2025, CCSD marked 140 years of Catholic education in Alberta, a milestone grounded in gratitude. We stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and their legacy lives on as we continue to live and learn in our Catholic faith, so that students, centred in Christ, realize their full potential.
From this strong foundation, we are also called to care for one another in deeper and more personal ways. Mental Health Week reminds us that we all carry stories and struggles that are not always visible. At CCSD, this commitment is reflected in our wellness framework – safe enough to learn, brave enough to try – and in our continued focus on supporting students with complexities. Well-being for both students and staff remain a board priority. We are called to create spaces where all feel safe, supported, and valued. Connection strengthens us, prayer grounds us, and compassion sustains us.
In this season of renewal, these themes come together in a simple but powerful truth – we are all part of a village, and each person matters. May we continue to walk together with open hearts, lifting one another up and ensuring all feel seen, supported, and loved.
