It has been a great summer in our communities as we have been fortunate to gather safely and enjoy activities that have always made Calgary-Mountain View unique. Neighbour days, Stampede breakfasts, farmers markets, and many more community-led initiatives have helped us make the most of the warm days.
As cooler days approach and we turn up the thermostat, affordability becomes more prevalent in the day-to-day lives of Albertans. Many constituents have reached out to let us know how they are impacted by utility increases and to express their concerns that the UCP government’s programs will not help them overcome the increasing financial burden. I have recently advocated for a ban on disconnections and continue to call on the government to improve access to relief for all Albertans.
Post-secondary students are feeling the pinch this September through increasing tuition and the government’s recent cut of the Alberta Student Grant for full-time students. We want to encourage our new generation of future leaders and innovators to stay in Alberta and build our province. Giving students stable funding, reigning in tuition increases, and reinstating the STEP program are just a few of the measures I am calling on the government to implement to keep young Albertans here and provide an affordable education.
My colleagues and I are also very excited to see Calgary Pride return to in-person celebrations. We hope to see you at the parade on September 4 to celebrate the 2SLGBTQ+ community as we continue to advocate for better health access, inclusion, and policies that improve safety within our communities.
