Mission’s President’s Message for November

Keep Up to Date – Sign Up for Email Updates

Things can and do change and quickly. The newsletter is not frequent enough to communicate things that are changing on short notice in regards to the community association, the community centre, and community events.

So, in order for us to keep you up to date, please register your email address near the bottom of the first page of our website. Our email list is then updated to include your email address. The website address is www.cliffbungalowmission.com.

Ongoing Community Events

We have ongoing jazz and potlucks in the community centre. Jazz is normally the first Wednesday, although the January one is on the second Wednesday. There is a different jazz group each month. It is an affordable night out and the jazz groups are very good.

The potlucks are generally the second Sunday, although December is the first Sunday as everyone’s schedules become very busy later in December. This is a great way to meet and get to know others. There is always lots of great food.

History Book: Third Printing Now Available

We have received the third printing of our award-winning history book. They will be available for purchase at all our events at the community centre, including our AGM on November 23. This is a great way of learning the history of the community in which you live. They are great as gifts.

Annual General Meeting – Wednesday, November 23

The date of our 2022 AGM is Wednesday, November 23. There are more details elsewhere in this newsletter. We will also send out an email to the community email list.

Board Update

At the time of writing this, we are recruiting heritage and social directors. If you have questions, or would like to explore taking on one of these important roles, please contact Bob at [email protected].

Membership Processing Volunteer Needed

With our current volunteers, we are falling behind in processing new memberships and renewals. We need a new volunteer to specifically work on processing memberships. That person would keep the membership list up to date, send out new membership cards, and send out renewal date stickers. This would be done on a monthly basis. Contact Bob at [email protected].

Residential Parking Permits

Further to the residential parking permits situation, City Council approved the proposed changes. Ward 8 Councillor Walcott was one of those voting for the changes.

The City undertook a review of the residential parking permit policy in 2018 and 2019. In January 2021, a new policy was approved by City Council. This new policy was significantly different from the previous policy. CBMCA and community residents were not informed about these changes and therefore did not have an opportunity to let City Council know about our concerns. Implementation of the new policy started in January 2022. Some community residents suddenly discovered that they could no longer get a parking permit. Buildings that were taller than four stories and had more than 20 dwelling units were no longer eligible.

In March 2022, buildings built before 1945 became eligible for one flex pass per dwelling unit. We did not learn of this change until August 2022 when we made an inquiry to our Councillor’s office for an update on what was happening.

Then on September 7, I received an email from the Calgary Parking Authority informing me that a proposed Market Permit report was going to the Infrastructure and Planning Committee two days later and then onto Council September 13 when it was approved. We sent an email out to the community email list that night. The cost of this new permit would be $100 per month ($1,200 per year).

It is unfortunate how this matter was dealt with. First, there was a lack of sufficient notice or no notice at all and therefore lack of opportunity to let Council know what the issues were/are from our perspective. Second, there are other small apartment-style buildings built after 1945 that also do not have full off-street parking.
