Message from the Director of
Traffic and Safe Streets
May sees increased neighbourhood
activity with warmer weather and longer daylight, requiring attentiveness from
all road users. Shared responsibility, cautious travel, and awareness around
parks, schools, and construction ensures safety. KGCA encourages everyone to
model safe behaviour and look out for one another.

Community and Enforcement Updates
CPS and Bylaw Services focus on
speed compliance and school-zone safety. Roadwork and infrastructure
improvements continue throughout May. Active transportation, including walking
and cycling, is on the rise.
Community Alert: Copper Wire Theft
Copper wire theft is rising in
Killarney-Glengarry and across the city, disrupting electrical services,
traffic signals, and community infrastructure. KGCA urges residents to stay
alert, report suspicious activity to 9-11 or local authorities, and secure
outdoor wiring where possible.
What is Copper Wire Theft?
This crime involves stealing copper
from construction sites, vacant properties, utilities, telecommunications, and
community facilities for resale, often leaving costly damage behind.
Community Impact
Copper theft can:
·
Cause
power outages, telecommunications disruptions, streetlight failures, reducing
public safety.
·
Delay
construction projects and increase repair and housing costs ultimately
affecting residents and taxpayers.
·
Create
fire hazards and unsafe public spaces.
What Residents Can Do
·
Report
suspicious activity in progress to 9-1-1; for non-emergencies, use the CPS
non-emergency line.
·
Note
vehicle details and suspect descriptions when safe, but do not confront anyone.
·
Submit
anonymous tips to Calgary Crime Stoppers for potential rewards.
For traffic or safety concerns,
residents are encouraged to call 3-1-1 or submit a request online. Reporting
supports data-driven decisions and helps prioritize community improvements.
As May brings increased movement
and activity, consistent awareness, visible presence, and cooperative behaviour
remain key to maintaining a safe neighbourhood. KGCA continues to advocate for
and support safe, accessible mobility for all residents.
Wishing everyone a safe and active
May.
