Hello
Gardeners,

May has
arrived in Calgary, and with it comes the true start of our growing season. The
days are longer, the soil is warming, and our garden is coming back to life.
Whether you’re a seasoned grower or brand new this year, there’s lots to do—and
lots to look forward to.

What to
Plant Now

Early
May can still bring chilly nights, so focus on cold-hardy crops:

·
Direct sow: peas, spinach, lettuce,
radishes, carrots, beets

·
Transplant: hardy greens like kale and
Swiss chard

Tip:
Keep frost cloth or old sheets handy, Calgary can still surprise us with late
frosts!

Toward
the end of May (after the last frost date), you can begin planting:

·
Beans, cucumbers, squash

·
Tomatoes, peppers, and herbs (harden off
first!)

Garden
Tasks for May

·
Clean up weeds before they take hold

·
Turn and amend soil with compost or manure

·
Repair or build trellises and supports

·
Start a watering routine (mornings are
best!)

·
Mulching early helps lock in moisture and
keeps weeds down—your future self will thank you.

Pollinator
Love

Let’s
support bees and beneficial insects this season. Consider planting:

·
Marigolds

·
Calendula

·
Borage

Avoid
pesticides whenever possible and embrace a balanced garden ecosystem.

A
Gentle Reminder

Please
remember to respect our community garden neighbours. Make sure to maintain and remove
overgrowth throughout the season. If anyone has questions, feel free to reach
out to the garden committee!

Lastly,
gardening in Calgary means adapting, learning, and sometimes replanting, and
that’s okay! Every gardener, no matter their experience, grows alongside their
plants.

Happy
planting,

Your
