Community League Association News

For our organization, the beginning of May
represents the start of a new fiscal year. It is also a time to reflect on the
year that’s ending, Here’s some of our thoughts on the past year.

A new bylaw was approved that changed our
membership to Resident and Non-resident membership at $12 for both kinds. A
successful AGM was held, board members were elected, and some re-elected. Over
40 people and organizations have rented from our facility – both long-term and
short-term to run events like sports, meetings, birthdays, weddings,
anniversaries, before and after school, and others.

About 700 people participated in our Stampede
Event. It was attended by the Stampede Princesses and the Mayor. The Community
Cleanup in September was again a huge success. In five hours, 330+ vehicles
were processed, we managed to collect five full garbage trucks of waste, two 40
yd³ metal bins, seven bins of electronics, and two trailer loads of tires.

The Trunk Sale in September, Christmas Market in
November, and Spring Market in March created market opportunities for small
businesses. The Markets also generated both financial and in-kind support for
the Veteran’s Food Bank and funds for the Community Centre. We had a successful
Casino fund raising event at the Elbow River Casino on October 8 and 9. People
from Cedarbrae and outside volunteered to make this a success. Meet Your Neighbour
Night was held in November where beer and wine was served coupled with trivia. A
winter break family event was organized for families to find something to do
during the Christmas to New Year holiday break and both indoor and outdoor
activities were organized fuelled with a hot chocolate treat.

Two educational workshops were organized on the
topic of home safety in December, and Wealth and Estate financial series in
March. We have also run multiple cooking classes, hands-on savouring of not
just the dishes created but also the company of like-minded neighbours. Mahjong
was introduced to Cedarbrae in November. It has grown to be attended by almost
40 people every week. What started out as once-a-week program has grown to
twice a week (Tuesdays and Fridays) as it gained popularity in a very short period
of time.

Our Seniors Group has organized two dinner
nights in April and January that brought them together for a delicious meal and
a special time together. This group also hosts a weekly coffee group always
full of lively conversation. In addition, weekly, we have a large group of
community members in to play Canasta.

Our dedicated volunteers put in their heart and
soul and got the ice rink ready. It required them to stay more than three hours
outside multiple times and, at times, after midnight working in harsh weather.
All that work was to have the rink running and make winter fun for children and
community members.

Pickleball is a growing sport in the North
America, and the popularity of our Pickleball program is proof of that. What
makes our program standout from the crowd is that we run a demand driven and
recreational program seven days a week, in the evenings and on statutory
holidays. We have self-declared levels (Beginner, Novice, Intermediate and
Advance). We also run mixed- level plays; for people to test themselves before
transitioning to the next level, there are many well-attended open sessions.
Finally, we organize lessons and run guided plays with a certified instructor.
