October arrives
with the beautiful fall colours clearly evident in the ravines and other parts
of our community. Nights draw in and the temperature starts to drop, turning
our thoughts to the coming cold weather and dare we say “snow!”

It is also a time
of celebration with the Thanksgiving holiday being celebrated on the second
Monday of October, a wonderful time to spend with family or friends and enjoy a
turkey dinner. Canadian Thanksgiving is based on ancient European harvest
festivals and the tradition of giving thanks for the fall crop yields. The
earliest recorded Canadian Thanksgiving dates back to 1578 when English
explorer, Martin Fobisher, held a ceremony in Nunavut to thank God for
surviving a perilous voyage to the New World.

As always, the
community centre is busy with programs and events for all to enjoy. Check
things out on our website or call the office. In particular. We have the Toy
Show on October 3 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Come and see what’s
available for sale! October 9 from 6:30 to 9:00 pm is a special
Board Games Demo night for ages 8 and up, put on by our very own local resident
who owns Under the Mountain Games in Brentwood. The night will feature Catan,
Ticket to Ride, Dungeons and Dragons, and more so bring your games to the
community centre for an evening of fun.

We have an Art
Show on October 17 and the Quilters’ Show, October 24 so be sure to mark your
calendars for these events.

Of course,
rounding out October is Halloween. The community will be alive with goblins so
please drive cautiously and if you are happy to hand out treats, put on your
outdoor lights and shovel your walkways if we have had our typical month end
snow fall.

Just a reminder
that we are still short a few volunteers for Casino Night. The casinos are
particularly important to ECA as the revenue earned funds our operations. If
you can spare time on November 3 or 4, email Jymi at [email protected].
There are a number of job options.

Enjoy this
wonderful month of change as we all prepare for winter.
