A Summer of Growing,
Giving, and Getting Our Hands Dirty
The PCA Community Garden
once again had a successful season.
As always, we were
amazed and impressed by our volunteers and by the wonderful little garden
community that continues to grow each year. As we move into autumn, it’s a good
time to pause and reflect on what we accomplished together this summer.
The biggest project the
garden community took on this year was the renewal of the herb garden. The old
herb circle had become overgrown and full of weeds, so it was time for a fresh
start. A massive thank you goes to Paul M. for building the fantastic new herb
beds, and to the many volunteers who helped fill and plant them. Over the
summer, we planted herbs and edible flowers in five beautiful new raised beds
in the herb circle.
We also completed major
work around the food forest. Volunteers pruned, cleared overgrowth, laid mulch
and improved the pathways to make it easier for people to access and pick the
berries. Keeping these areas open and accessible is always a bit of a battle,
but the results are worth it.
And of course, there was
plenty of pruning, weeding and transplanting along the way, all while enjoying
sunshine, snacks and each other’s company.
A huge thank you to the
enthusiastic young volunteers from Youth Central, who brought so much energy to
our workdays. They certainly showed us that many hands really do make light
work. This was our first year, partnering with Youth Central, and we hope it
won’t be our last.
Looking ahead, next year
we plan to relocate and rebuild the compost area. In future years, we’ll also
need to look at rebuilding some of the garden beds and possibly the garden
shed.
To everyone who joined
us in the garden this summer, thank you for bringing your energy, enthusiasm
and hard work. Your efforts truly benefit the whole community.
Interested in getting
involved next season? Anyone who would like a raised garden bed next summer is
encouraged to email [email protected]. We also love welcoming volunteers
who may not want their own bed but still want to garden, lend a hand and be
part of the community spirit.
