You Build

Most major
home improvements and specific trade work require separate building,
electrical, or plumbing permits. Review online guidelines for Home
Improvement Projects. You can reach out to the City Planning Services Centre by
calling 403-268-5311 or visiting the Municipal Building at 800 Macleod Trail SE
if you need specific property research. You can check or apply for property
permits in the Hawkwood community through the City of Calgary Online Services
Portal. Use the Interactive Calgary Map to view active or recent development
and building permits. Or view building permit records across communities via
Open Calgary. For Application Status, log into your account on the City of
Calgary Online Services page, using your job access code.

When
undertaking a new project, it is always best to consult with the Calgary
Planning Services Centre to find out what kinds of permits you will need. For
property projects, there is information on the City website about making
changes from planning to construction. You should learn the permit types and
how to apply for them, including the steps and how decisions are made. For
residential buildings, there are applications for secondary or backyard suites,
home renovations and basements; garage, shed, deck or gazebos. The rules also
apply to business owners or contractors planning to build or develop low
density residential space and commercial, industrial or multi-residential
space. You must apply for permits on private property governing signs,
commercial kitchens, special events, and more. For residential and commercial
contractors, consult approval processes for electrical wiring approval,
plumbing and gas installations, or water development resources. Building
permits are needed to erect, demolish, relocate, alter or repair a structure,
or change the use or occupancy of a space. Your application will be reviewed to
ensure it is safe and meets the Alberta Building Code. Development permits are
for new projects, changes in use or additions to existing structures. Your plan
must follow the Land Use Bylaw, any other relevant plans or policies, and
Municipal Government Act. The intended use will be either permitted or
discretionary. There may be conditions attached to the approval.
