Ranchlands Take a Look

Taking a dog for a walk gives you
time to notice things—and on a recent walk, what I noticed was the trees.

Ranchlands is fortunate to have
many beautiful, mature trees. But if you look a little closer, you will also
see younger trees appearing along our pathways, in parks, and throughout the community.

These new trees are part of the
City of Calgary’s efforts to grow our urban forest and expand the city’s tree
canopy. Calgary’s tree canopy includes all the leaves and branches of the trees
growing along our streets, in parks and in our yards. The City’s long-term goal
is to increase canopy coverage across Calgary to 16 per cent by 2060.

What stood out for me was the
variety among the younger trees. We are familiar with the tall poplars found
throughout Ranchlands, but many of these newer trees have quite different
shapes, leaves and colours. As autumn arrives, some are turning brilliant red,
others gold, while the low growing evergreens add still more variety.

I cannot identify all the trees in
these photographs, but perhaps some of you can. Do you recognize any of them?

There is always something
interesting to spot around Ranchlands. This time it was the trees—who knows
what we’ll notice next? Sometimes all it takes is a walk—and, in my case,
Bailey leading the way—to see something that has been right in front of us all
along.
