Meet The
Artist and Your Instructor
Hugo Dubon
As part of
this series, you will be introduced to the talented local artists that will be
guiding our community arts programming sessions. Without further ado, we’d like
to introduce you to Hugo Dubon who will be leading the open studio sessions on
Friday evenings throughout October and November.
Born in
San Salvador, El Salvador, Hugo Dubon has called Calgary, Canada home since
1987. Hugo graduated from the Alberta University of the Arts in 1997 receiving
a Diploma from the Visual Communications Program.
Afterwards, he began working as a
freelance illustrator while keeping his fine art practice going on the side. He
was lucky to have also been represented by a few commercial galleries in
Calgary. Working in traditional Drawing and Painting mediums, he has created a
variety of illustrations for diverse clients, from editorial to advertising to
corporate as well as producing works for private commissions.
Teaching came later on, coincidentally,
at his Alma Mater at first and, eventually, at North Mount Pleasant and
Wildflower art centres for the City of Calgary. He explains that “teaching
didn’t come easy, still isn’t in some ways, and I had to also learn how to
teach what little I knew. It has been a process, but the most important thing
that I tell students who take classes is to have fun, keep things simple and
don’t stop learning.”
