Brentwood Editor’s Scribblings May 2026

Dear Brentwoodians,

Spring is in the Air?

We are still getting early April
snow as I write this, but (hopefully!) soon we will be into spring weather. Boots,
sleds, and skis will be put away, and our warm-weather gear will be pulled out
of storage. Many of us have been looking forward to spending more time outdoors
in Brentwood’s parks and natural areas.

Warmer weather always means more
activity on our streets and sidewalks, so I wish to remind drivers to be extra
vigilant of cyclists and pedestrians at this time of year – especially kids! It
is good for our health, for our city, and for our planet to be out and about on
bikes and on foot instead of in our cars, so let’s make it safe and fun and
share the road.

Of course, responsibility is
also shared. Cyclists should obey the rules of the road, including observing
stop signs and using hand signals when turning. Cyclists also have a duty to be
careful around pedestrians, and to stay off the sidewalk unless you are, or are
with, a child.

Pedestrians play a part in their
own safety too! Remember to look both ways before you cross the street (for
some people this may require looking up from your phone!), even at a crosswalk
or stoplight.

Let’s all be considerate,
careful, and enjoy our spring weather!

Council Hearings

Elsewhere in this issue, Melanie
Swailes reports on the Blanket Rezoning repeal hearings at City Hall. She spent
a full day watching and listening, and gave her own presentation on behalf of
the Brentwood Community Association. Many thanks to Melanie for devoting so
much time and energy to advocating for our community!

Photo Contest

The Bugle is
looking for Brentwood’s best amateur photographers to provide cover images each
month. If you have a great snap of our neighbourhood saved on your phone or
posted on your social media feed, send it in for a chance to be featured on the
cover of an upcoming issue! Photos must be 300 DPI or higher (i.e. from a
newer model phone or good digital camera), 2400 x 1600 pixels minimum size, and
portrait orientation. If submitting pictures of minors, please make sure
that you have direct, express permission to submit the picture from a parent or
guardian. Send your photos, or any questions, to [email protected].

Yours sincerely,

Jonathan Jucker
