Purple Martins Project in New Brighton
Did you know that we have a Purple Martins
colony in New Brighton? There is a lot of material out there about these
beautiful birds and it is nice to admire them here in our own community. If you
take a walk by their nesting boxes in the late afternoon, you can admire their
interesting flying patterns when they feed on insects.
The birds will be back this season in
greater number, and we don’t know if the project will be expanded or not just
yet. Andrew B., a resident who puts time, passion, and money into this project,
will send us updates later in the season, but for now we just want everyone who
takes walks in the community to know more about this project. Take a look at
our “Purple Martins” page on the “Projects and Events” tab on our website –
ournewbrighton.ca.
This is the location of the project in case
you walk by and wonder what the white birdhouse is all about. Just as a
reminder for the parents – please do not let your kids shake the post of the
birdhouse, the Purple Martins are quite sensitive, and they can be stressed and
disturbed by those shakings.
