Planning Update
Proposed updates to approve local area plans limited scale
policies – from the City of Calgary’s planning department.
City Council directed Administration to amend six of the
approved local area plans (LAPs) following the repeal of citywide rezoning.
The proposed amendments would limit the areas where rowhouse
and townhouse development (i.e. three or more units on a parcel) is considered
appropriate by applying consistent policy across all the approved local area
plans by applying the same location-based Limited Scale Policies in the
Westbrook Communities and Heritage Communities LAPs to North Hill Communities,
Riley Communities, West Elbow Communities, East Calgary International Avenue
Communities, South Shaganappi Communities and Chinook Communities LAPs.
What are the proposed changes?
The proposed updates would limit where rowhouses and
townhouses are supported to parcels that have a rear lane and meet one of the
following location criteria:
·
Within a transit station area,
·
Along or adjacent to an identified main street,
·
On a corner parcel,
·
Or adjacent to a school, park or open space.
More information about the proposed updates can be found on

Mobility
Update
Back to
School – Please Slow Down and Stay Alert
With students
returning to school, please remember to drive carefully, obey posted speed
limits and signage, and use extra caution around school and playground zones.
Our streets are particularly busy at drop-off and pick-up times, and a few
extra seconds can make a significant difference to pedestrian and cyclist
safety. Find out more on the Calgary Police’s website: Back to School Safety.
Speed
Reductions Coming to Several Connector Roads
We are
pleased to report that speed reductions have been announced for several
important connector roads in our communities. The changes are expected to be
completed by the end of this season, with implementation anticipated by
November at the latest.
The affected
roads include:
·
14 Street SW – 33 Avenue to 38A Avenue
·
38 Avenue SW – 14 Street to 16 Street
·
16 Street SW – 34 Avenue to 50 Avenue
·
20 Street SW – 26 Avenue to 50 Avenue
These roads
carry significant amounts of vehicle traffic through our communities, and
reducing speeds should help improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and
residents while addressing some of the traffic concerns we have been hearing
from community members.
New Traffic
Signals Approved
New traffic
lights have also been approved at two intersections:
20 Street SW
and 50 Avenue SW For more information you can view it on the City of Calgary
website.
20 Street SW
and 42 Avenue SW
At this time,
we do not have a confirmed construction or implementation schedule. We will
continue to follow up and provide an update when more information becomes
available.
26 Avenue SW
Improvements – Construction Underway
The City’s 26
Avenue SW Improvements Project is now underway, with construction taking place
along the corridor between 14 Street and 37 Street SW.
The project
is intended to make 26 Avenue safer, more comfortable and more reliable for
everyone, including pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and motorists. Key
improvements include protected bike lanes and multi-use pathways, upgraded
intersections, new floating bus stops, improved lighting, and a reduced speed
limit of 40 km/h.
The project
is also being coordinated with other planned infrastructure work, including
road reconstruction, Crowchild Trail Bridge rehabilitation, MAX Yellow BRT
station upgrades, and underground water and storm-system improvements.
Current
construction:
14 to 18
Street SW: Underground utility work is underway and expected to be completed by
the end of 2026.
14 to 22
Street SW: Mobility upgrades will begin with the 14 to 16 Street section toward
the end of September, with additional phases continuing into 2027.
25 to 29
Street SW: Mobility upgrades are underway, with the 26 to 29 Street section
expected to be completed by the end of September.
29 to 33
Street SW: Work is expected to begin in late September or early October.
Additional
sections west toward 38 Street SW will follow in 2027.
Residents
should expect ongoing construction activity, traffic changes and potential
delays as the work progresses.
We will
continue to monitor the project and provide updates as construction moves
through the community. You can also get further information on this project
from the City’s website

Working
with the Ward 8 Councillor’s Office
Members of
the Marda Loop Community Association Mobility Committee continue to meet
regularly with the Ward 8 Councillor’s office to discuss traffic, pedestrian,
cycling and mobility safety concerns throughout our communities.
The speed
reductions and new traffic signals are important steps toward addressing some
of the concerns residents have raised. We will continue advocating for
practical measures that improve safety while maintaining reasonable access and
mobility throughout the community.
Help Us
Identify Traffic Safety Concerns
Please
continue to let us know about traffic and mobility issues in your
neighbourhood. Your observations help us identify recurring problems and
determine where further improvements may be needed.
You can
contact the Mobility Team at: [email protected].
We also
encourage residents to report concerns directly to the City through 3-1-1.
Every 3-1-1 report creates a record and contributes to the City’s data and
metrics. A greater number of reports can help demonstrate the extent and
frequency of an issue and can increase the priority for investigation and
potential action. See below for details how to report safety concerns to 3-1-1.
Thank you for
helping us make our streets safer for everyone who lives, walks, cycles and
drives in our community.
