Leadership, Volunteers, and the Heart of
Our Community
Behind every event, every program, and
every successful initiative in Mount Royal is a group of dedicated individuals
working quietly and consistently to make things happen. These are the
volunteers, committee members, and elected board members who give their time,
energy, and creativity to the Mount Royal Community Association. This May, we
shine a spotlight on the people behind the scenes and invite you to consider
your role in our community’s leadership.
The MRCA is governed by a volunteer board
of directors composed of residents from both Upper and Lower Mount Royal. These
individuals bring diverse backgrounds and experiences—from professionals and
retirees to students and stay-at-home parents. What unites them is a shared
commitment to making Mount Royal a vibrant, inclusive, and responsive
community.
The board oversees the operations of the
community hall, programming, communications, advocacy, planning and development
engagement, and financial management. Board members are elected annually at the
AGM and are supported by committees that focus on specific areas such as
events, heritage, planning, and facilities.
Much of what the MRCA achieves each year
depends on volunteer contributions. From helping to flood the skating rink in
winter to planting gardens in spring, from delivering newsletters to
coordinating the Stampede BBQ, volunteers are essential to community life.
Often, these roles are small in time commitment but large in impact.
Serving on the board or a committee is also
an opportunity to shape the future of Mount Royal. As a board member, you can
help set priorities, approve budgets, review development applications, and
represent the neighbourhood in civic discussions. You will also meet other
engaged residents, build leadership skills, and contribute meaningfully to the
well-being of your neighbours.
New volunteers are always welcome. You do
not need to be an expert or have previous experience—just a willingness to
participate and a desire to make a difference. The MRCA provides orientation,
support, and ongoing learning opportunities through the Federation of Calgary
Communities.
In addition to board and committee roles,
there are many one-time or seasonal ways to help. These include setting up and
taking down events, assisting with grant applications, writing articles or
taking photos for the newsletter, assisting with social media, or helping
maintain outdoor spaces.
If you are interested in volunteering but
are not sure where to start, reach out to us at www.mrca.ca or email us
directly. We will help match your interests with available opportunities and
provide guidance on how to get involved.
This spring, the MRCA board is also
beginning preparations for the Annual General Meeting later this year. We are
currently seeking nominations for board positions and welcoming inquiries from
residents who are curious about what serving on the board involves. If you have
ideas, questions, or want to observe a board meeting before committing, we
encourage you to reach out.
Volunteers and leaders are the heart of any
community. Mount Royal’s enduring success as one of Calgary’s most vibrant
neighbourhoods is due in large part to the commitment of those who have stepped
forward over the decades. We are proud of that tradition—and hopeful about the
next generation of local leaders.
Membership is also essential. It is what
allows our board and volunteers to operate confidently, knowing that the
community supports and values their work. If you have not already joined or
renewed your MRCA membership, please do so today. Every member strengthens our
foundation.
Join today. Lead, support, participate—your
community needs you.
