We
have a fantastic neighbourhood for our furry friends, with lots of walking
paths and natural areas to explore. Now that the weather is finally nice here
are some tips as you head out with your dog for a walk, or let your cat have
some fresh air.
·
Our pets are not the only animals who
enjoy time outside in our neighbourhood. There have been several coyote and
bobcat sightings in our neighbourhood, most of which coexist with us peacefully.
Both animals will prey on small animals such as squirrels, mice and rabbits but
if a household pet is in easy reach they will happily turn their attention to
them as well. To help keep wildlife away from your yard make sure there are no
easy food sources nearby such as fallen fruit from trees, cat or dog food, or
easily accessible bird feeders. Be sure to have your eyes on your pet when
allowing them outdoors, being able to go outside and supervise them is best to
deter any wildlife.
·
While on walks in our neighbourhood,
please remember to pick up after your dog if they use the facilities (aka
public pathways, neighbours’ lawns or parkland) for their business. Make sure
you have a bag or other container to pick up your dog’s waste and deposit in
the nearest closed trash can (wildlife may be attracted to it if left in an
uncovered garbage can).
·
Did you know there are several holidays
throughout the year to celebrate your pets? In June there are several including
Pet Appreciation Week from June 7 to 13, Dog Party Day on June 21, and Take
Your Cat to Work Day on June 19 (easy for anyone working from home!). Check
them out for fun at https://www.canadapetcare.com/blog/pet-holidays-calendar/.
Keep an eye out throughout the summer as well for pet friendly festivals
through the city. In June we have the Dog Jog 2026 not too far away in North
Glenmore Park happening on June 6 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.
With a little help from everyone we can keep
our neighbourhood clean and safe for humans and animals of all kinds. Enjoy the
summer with your pets!
