Counting Hawkwood

by Anne Burke

Statistics Canada planned to hire 32,000+
for Census jobs. The employment period runs from March 2026 to July 2026.
Canada conducts the Census every five years, ending in one and six. The legal
authority in Canada is the Statistics Act. Participation is mandatory. The aim
is that everyone will be counted. The data collected should accurately reflect
our changing society. Each Canadian household is required to complete a
questionnaire, either a basic short form or a long form. The short form has
questions on age, gender, language, marital status, and householders. The long
form also asks about place of birth, ethnic or cultural origins, population
groups, religion, mobility, education, labour, commuting, and housing (or
unhoused). The focus is on one-parent families, Indigenous peoples, immigrants,
seniors, and language groups. The 2026 Census collection began with a letter to
most households in early May, except for northern and remote areas, for which the
letter was sent in February. Information and instructions were on how to
complete the questionnaire online. Those without reliable access to the
Internet could call the Census Help Line to complete the form by phone or
request a paper copy. Families find the best neighbourhoods by dwelling types,
average age, family size, and languages spoken. Municipal and provincial
governments track growth and stability or decline to decide whether to add or
expand services like public housing or emergency services. Businesses may use
counts and information on age, sex, income, and household type. The 2026 Census
data will be available approximately 18 months from Census Day. Visit

City of Calgary. All other tables were from Statistics Canada’s 2001 Census of
Canada. Calgary community level data from the 2006 Census of Canada was not
