How Glenbrook Got Its Name
By the late 1950s, the area formerly known
as Holmpatrick was growing quickly and needed a new community name. In 1959,
the city first proposed Glendale South, hoping to match the name of the nearly
community. Residents of the existing Glendale neighbourhood objected to sharing
their name, and the next proposed name was Glenpatrick.
That still did not feel right to many
residents, who continued proposing new names, including Glenview and, as the
city chose, Glenbrook. Later that same year, the Holmpatrick name quietly
disappeared, and Glenbrook became the official name of the neighbourhood.
What began as a small naming dispute became
the final step in giving this community its own identity.
